In this blog, Jack, a Strategy and Operations intern based in Dublin, recalls the path that brought him to Indeed, the projects he had the opportunity to work on, and advice for future interns!

It’s funny writing this now, twelve weeks later, as I reflect on my internship at Indeed. How did it all get started?

I had finished my first year in college and was simultaneously working at a local hotel and looking for a job where I hoped I’d be able to learn a new set of skills. That’s when I stumbled across Indeed’s internship opportunity. Initially, the words ‘Strategy’ and ‘Finance’ caught my eye, and my interest was further piqued by the idea of learning more about job-seeking/hiring cultures worldwide.

I was vaguely aware of Indeed’s platform because I’d previously used it to find a job, but I didn’t know much about the company. After learning more about Indeed and completing my onboarding, I felt we were all working towards something more significant. That feeling came and went throughout my internship when I thought about why I was doing the work that I was doing: helping people get jobs. Indeed was founded with the commitment to put job seekers first, which has led us to today and our Job Seeker First Mission. With every decision about our products and business, we ask, “what’s best for the job seeker?”  The mission is so powerful, and it’s palpable for those who work #insideindeed!

While at Indeed, I worked to identify competitive advantages in the Next Markets – essentially finding the extra, unique services Indeed offer to help better people get jobs. The work was challenging at times. For example, I had to come to terms with the fact that some of the specific data I was searching for may not exist. Also, attempting to translate ‘localized’ terms to compare products and standardize data was challenging. Shout out to the Growth Pod team and the snack kitchen for the help encouraging and aiding me through those challenges!

As my first proper job in the corporate world, I didn’t know what to expect. I could never have anticipated how helpful and patient everyone would be with me, the nuances I would discover about having a career, and how much I would learn about the HR tech industry and employment in international markets. I also developed a whole new set of skills I  would never have been able to achieve to the same extent otherwise, such as collaborating remotely, time management, and research skills. These learnings were accentuated through talking to my new colleagues (particularly my manager) and learning from the tips and tricks they acquired through experience. It was only toward the end of the internship that I realized how invaluable the informal office chats were.

Overall, I can honestly say I enjoyed my time as a member of the Indeed family and would recommend it to anyone willing to work hard, who wants to be in an office where learning in all its forms is encouraged, and who wants to be passionate about the mission they work for.
