At Indeed, we’re building the bridge between military job seekers and employers – including our own workforce. In this blog, you’ll hear from several veterans and allies at Indeed as they share the value of hiring a veteran and how we support veterans #insideindeed and outside the workplace.

What employers should know about hiring a veteran?

Employers should know that when hiring a veteran, whether an individual contributor or a leader, they get a dedicated, loyal teammate. People join the military for various reasons – to get an education, learn a trade or skill set, become a leader, make a better life for themselves, or see the world, etc. However, when any individual joins the military, they quickly learn about their job, but also about the mission, core values, and teamwork.  Military-experienced candidates seek to understand and perform the task well and support their teammates. They also understand the importance of training and developing teams to excel. They know how to counsel and coach and be counseled and coached. These are all important skills in the military; but equally important in the civilian world. Military experienced candidates contribute not only with their experience and skill set but also make great teammates committed to a company’s overall mission.

How does Indeed support veterans in and outside the workplace?

One of Indeed’s core values is inclusion and belonging. We strive to support all employees and have Inclusion Business Resource Groups (IBRGs) for people to connect and identify with. Our Veterans and Allies group supports former military, military spouses, family members, and their allies globally. The group holds regular meetings to discuss current events, issues, questions and host special guest speakers. The IBRG provides volunteer opportunities to support veterans in the community, resources for benefits and mental health, and an outlet to learn from others. Indeed also partners with Hiring Our Heroes and supports military job seekers through the Indeed for Military program.

What employers should know about hiring a veteran?

Veterans are diligent; they are built to serve and exceed all expectations. The easiest part is that we like to be told what to do, when to do it and how to do it. The hardest part is that we like to be told what to do, when to do it and how to do it.

Vets appreciate transparency. If you want the best out of a vet, be honest and upfront.

How does Indeed support veterans in and outside the workplace?

Outside of the workplace, Indeed offers veteran employees many opportunities and perks. Working at Indeed, we have access to mental health aid through counseling and coaching services.

As job seekers, vets are supported through Indeed by our hosted jobs specific to Military veterans and through helpful resources. We even offer business resources as part of our campaign efforts to help employers hire veterans.

What employers should know about hiring a veteran?

The military is like one large business, full of a diverse and talented workforce. Though it might not easily translate on a resume, veterans have a wide breadth of experience that can be a huge business resource. The military teaches leadership, problem-solving, adaptability, teamwork, resilience, and so much more. Veterans just need one business to take a chance on them in the civilian sector to allow them to share these skills.

How does Indeed support veterans in and outside the workplace?

What employers should know about hiring a veteran?

Hiring a veteran means bringing on a highly-skilled problem solver with a unique blend of teamwork, leadership, and adaptability. These intangible skills aren’t often reflected on a traditional resume but are crucial to any business. So even when you come across a resume with military jargon that doesn’t seemingly align with the role they’re applying to, it’s probably still worth starting that conversation and simply asking, “What makes you a great fit for this role.”

Look past the resume and connect with the person behind it. Because as an employer, when you hire a veteran, you’re not just filling a role; you’re infusing your team with a broad set of skills honed under some of the most challenging circumstances. Veterans don’t just get the job done; they elevate the performance of those around them.

Since its official launch in 2018, our Indeed for Military program has made tremendous strides in building bridges between military-experienced job seekers and prospective employers. Not only do we offer free resume review services, job search filters to quickly identify military-friendly roles and a wealth of educational resources, but we’ve also partnered with the Department of Labor’s Veterans Employment & Training Service (VETS) to present personalized career services to Transitioning Service Members via the Employment Navigator & Partnership Pilot (ENPP).

Internally, our Veterans and Allies IBRG is constantly working to amplify the value we deliver to our veteran Indeedians. Our “Military Voices” series, highlighting our veterans’ unique stories, is just one example of how we are working to nurture understanding and foster camaraderie in our workspace.
